Fence Panels Sizing Guide – Get the Right Fit First Time
Share
When it comes to buying fence panels, size really does matter. Whether you're replacing a single panel or installing an entirely new fence line, getting the right size first time can save time, money, and a whole lot of hassle.
At Timber Supply Centre, we know that a great-looking fence starts with accurate measurements and the right product for the job. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about fence panel sizes – so you can shop with confidence.
Standard Fence Panel Sizes in the UK
In the UK, fence panels come in a few standard widths and a variety of heights. The most common width for a fence panel is 6ft (1.83m). This size is used as the standard in most fencing projects, and it fits neatly between concrete or wooden fence posts.
Common Fence Panel Heights:
- 3ft (0.91m) – Ideal for front gardens or decorative purposes
- 4ft (1.22m) – A good choice for boundary markers without blocking light
- 5ft (1.52m) – The most common size when used in combination with a gravel board.
- 6ft (1.83m) – The most popular height for privacy and security or for fences without a gravel board.
We also stock custom-sized panels for more unusual spaces – just give us a shout if you need something bespoke.
Measuring for Fence Panels: Top Tips
Before you place your order, it’s worth double-checking your measurements. Here’s how to do it:
-
Measure the gap between existing posts
If you’re replacing old panels, measure the distance from the inside edge of one post to the inside edge of the next. For concrete posts, this is inside the slot. This is your required panel width. -
Check for level ground
If your garden is sloped or uneven, you may need to step your panels or choose a style that follows the contours of the land. -
Account for gravel boards
If you're using gravel boards at the base of your fence (a great idea for longevity), remember to subtract their height from your total panel height. -
Allow space for fittings
Panels need to slot between posts, so make sure your measurements leave enough space for brackets or fixings.
Should You Go for Metric or Imperial Sizes?
Most panels are listed in feet and inches, but the actual product measurements are usually in metric (millimetres or metres). It’s worth checking the manufacturer’s spec before you order to avoid confusion.
For example:
- A “6ft x 6ft” panel is usually 1830mm x 1830mm
- A “6ft x 5ft” panel is typically 1830mm x 1520mm
Always double-check the size stated in the product description – especially if you're mixing and matching panels from different suppliers.
We work in both metric and imperial, so don't worry too much if ringing us... we'll know what you're talking about.
Choosing the Right Fence Style for the Size
Once you know your measurements, you can think about style. Taller panels offer more privacy, while lower panels can open up a space. Here are a few popular options from our range:
- Featheredge / Closeboard Panels – Sturdy and perfect for 6ft privacy fencing. We hand build all these panels at our yard here.
- Lap Panels / WaneyLaps / – Budget-friendly and not the best quality. We're not a fan of WaneyLaps and so we don't stock them here.
- Hit & Miss Panels – Great for windy areas where airflow is important
- Decorative Panels – Add a touch of elegance without sacrificing function - We're approved stockists of Jacksons Fencing and we have some beautiful styles available.
